Synopsis 

Alors qu’il est toujours l’hôte du Maharadjah, Tintin reçoit la visited’un chinois qui doit lui dire quelque chose de très important. Mais au moment de parler, le chinois est touché par une fléchette de poison qui rend fou. Avant de sombrer dans la démence, le malheureux à le temps de prononcer deux choses: “Shangaï” et “Mitsuhirato”.
Tintin, désireux de faire la lumière sur ce nouveau mystère, décide donc de se rendre au Japon. Durant les premiers jours de son voyage, il manque plusieurs fois de se faire tuer, mais un jeune chinois semble veiller sur lui, et lui évites la mort. Tintin finit par rencontrer Mitsuhirato, qui lui certifie avoir envoyé un émissaire pour le prévenir de rester auprès du Maharadjah.
Mais Mitsuhirato n’est-il pas tout simplement un fieffé menteur? Tintin décide d’enquêter.

Picking up where he left off in the Egyptian adventure Cigars of the Pharaoh, Tintin travels to China in The Blue Lotus, a tale which is generally considered Hergé’s first masterpiece. It’s also Tintin’s only foray into actual history, specifically the Sino-Japanese conflicts of the early 1930s. The political tensions combined with the chilling threats of drugs give the story an especially high and realistic sense of danger. Hergé’s interest in China was spurred by a friendship with a young Chinese student named Chang Chong-chen, a relationship that Tintin mirrors with a Chinese boy also named Chang Chong-chen. Hergé paints a vivid picture of China and takes the opportunity to denounce ethnic prejudices (though ironically his artistic depiction of the Japanese businessman Mitsuhirato is quite grotesque).

4,5 étoiles. Cette série va en s’améliorant. J’adore comment cette histoire se déroule en Chine et en Inde; c’est tellement unique ! L’histoire continue l’adventure du livre précédent, ce que j’ai vraiment apprécié. Il y avait aussi beaucoup d’intrigue et de mystère ainsi que d’aventures dans ce roman ! Et c’est vraiment ici qu’on voit Hergé qui commence son art exceptionnel, sa lutte pour les pays maltraités, et son effort de respecter les cultures où il place ses histoires. 

C’est ici que Tintin devient le vrai bon Tintin qu’on adore. Tchang est si gentil et M. Wang aussi, et son fils est si drôle – je suis désolé, mais je l’aime, lui et son éternel « je vous coupe la tête ? Voyons, ce n’est pas est sérieux… » 🤣 Et qu’Hergé ramène le poison du livre précédent, c’est vraiment une touche excellente. Oh, et j’adore la scène où ils attaquent la Personne Importante en pensant qu’il est Tintin… 🤣 Bref, c’est un livre très agréable. Et j’aime tellement la petite mention sur comment les cultures ne se comprennent pas et se présentent mal. ❤

4.5 stars. This series is getting better. I love how this story unfolds in China and India; it’s so unique! The story continues the adventure of the previous book, which I really enjoyed. There was also a lot of intrigue and mystery as well as adventure in this novel! And it is really here that we see Hergé begin his exceptional art, his fight for mistreated countries, and his effort to respect the cultures where he places his stories.

This is where Tintin becomes the real good Tintin we adore. Chang is so nice and Mr. Wang too, and his son is so funny – I’m sorry, but I love him and his eternal “shall I cut your head off? Come on, it’s not all that serious… ” 🤣 And that Hergé brings back the poison from the previous book, it’s really an excellent touch. Oh, and I love the scene where they attack the Important Person thinking he’s Tintin… 🤣 In short, it’s a delightful book. And I love the little mention about how cultures misunderstand and misrepresent each other. ❤
